I hadn't dreamt about my mother in a very long time, because the grief of my mother's loss had been replaced by worse horrors which more regularly stalked my nights. Last night was an exception. I dreamt of her again and awoke confused and surprised by the change. While my dreams of Mosrad were terrifying, and I was glad to have one night free of them, the dreams of my mother were unsettling in a different way. Something about Porpio á Fen had stirred them up again, though perhaps it was simply Eria's connection to Pania.
After a modest morning meal, Eria took me outside onto a small porch to show me the view. Many other inhabitants were up, doing their work and preparing for their day, implying a level of domesticity not unlike any other city in the world. I could almost pretend these people were normal. I noticed a small coracle propped up against the wall of the house and she informed me that this was how they got around Porpio á Fen after the flood waters came at night. Her answer was straight forward and didn't invite any other curiosities, but I couldn't resist asking about my day yesterday as it seemed the most likely chance at solitude, and I might not get another chance.
"Eria, when I was wandering yesterday I checked on our horses." She listened with interest, her eyes watchful. "I met a man there..." I paused, thinking that maybe she would take it as a cue to explain, but she didn't. "...he looked like you."
She smiled faintly. "Yes," she said quietly. "He is like me," she started, her eyes scanning the street below as she spoke, "we are..." she started again but stopped abruptly, her face blanched of color. She had seen something down below, but before I could encourage her to continue, she turned and fled back inside. It was irritating. Just when I thought I might learn something significant she had been frightened off. But by what? I looked at the street below, spotting Böðvar almost immediately. He stared up at me balefully. Disgusted, I turned and followed in Eria's wake.
Inside Cai and Swine were seated together at the small table playing a game. It looked as though Swine was teaching Cai how to play, so I came nearer and watched for several long moments. Yes, Swine was indeed teaching Cai how to play. I gave Cai a questioning look and he responded with a grin and shrug, and though I scowled, he remained unabashed.
A hand touched my arm lightly and I startled, swung around to discover Tóka behind me.
"Jack is awake, would like to see you. You come?" She didn't have to ask twice.
I entered the fur room and was delighted to discover Jack fully awake, sitting up in the fur chair I had used the day before. His face was lined with fatigue, the skin stretched tightly across his features, but he wore a smile so bright that my heart soared at the sight of him.
